The Importance of Food Safety

Food poisoning affects millions of people each year in the UK, the seriousness of which cannot be underestimated and in the most serious cases leads to loss of life.

Good food hygiene is essential to ensure that we are not harmed in any way by the food and drink we consume. As a food handler you have a legal obligation to ensure that you do not cause harm to anyone through bad practice, ignorance or neglect.

Anybody working with food as a food handler may be prosecuted if found responsible for a breach in the law.

The main reasons for food poisoning are negligence, poor management, a poor food safety culture and failure to implement good practices. Effective instruction and training will prevent food poisoning if the good practices food handlers are taught are implemented in the workplace.
